Role of the Steering Committee:

Baltimore Women United was initially established in direct response to the election of a Republican administration to the White House on November 8, 2016, whose campaign was built on misogyny, racism, xenophobia, ableism and generally hateful rhetoric. Women in the Baltimore region came together with a spirit of determination to stand up for justice in a unified and powerful voice by, at a minimum, taking action on the 8th day of each month through the 2020 presidential election.  The steering committee of Baltimore Women United is responsible for making critical decisions to advance the work of this newly formed and growing group committed to taking proactive steps to establish a just and equitable Baltimore, Maryland and United States of America. This includes, but is not limited to, putting structures in place to advance the ideas and desired actions of the membership of Baltimore Women United, while preserving high standards for serving as conscientious allies to all who seek a just society.

Membership of the Baltimore Women United steering committee is voluntary. Members commit to discuss, review and make decisions supporting the short and long term goals of Baltimore Women United. Participation on the steering committee indicates a commitment to actively support the purpose behind establishing the group with your unique lens. Therefore, membership also requires a commitment to recuse yourself in the event your participation has been minimal or silent, making room for a new active member.

Responsibilities of members of the Steering Committee:

  • View Slack channel daily to learn about impending decisions, challenges and opportunities for consideration

  • Commit to either weigh in on or intentionally decline to vote on decisions that come before the steering committee

  • Actively support and participate in building a diverse and inclusive culture and membership of Baltimore Women United

  • Model behaviors that facilitate the goals and philosophy of Baltimore Women United, including acknowledging positions of privilege and amplifying voices of people with lived experience wherever and whenever possible

  • Remain thoughtful and inquisitive about strategies and ideas that may advance the work of Baltimore Women United including your own personal growth

  • Serve on at least one committee of Baltimore Women United as an active member and/or liaison to the steering committee (this does not include supporting the planning or implementation of 8th days of action)
